Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669)
was one of the most important and influential painters of the Dutch Golden Age and the broader Baroque period. Born in Leiden, Netherlands, Rembrandt demonstrated exceptional skill in drawing and painting early in life and eventually settled in Amsterdam, where he gained fame as a portraitist and history painter. His work is characterized by a masterful use of light and shadow (chiaroscuro), deeply human expressions, and psychological depth.
Rembrandt created hundreds of paintings, drawings, and etchings, covering subjects like biblical scenes, self-portraits, landscapes, and daily life. Some of his most famous works include "The Night Watch", "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp", and his numerous self-portraits, which trace his aging and emotional journey. Peter Paul Rubens
Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640)
was a Flemish Baroque painter celebrated for his dynamic compositions, vibrant color palette, and dramatic, sensual style. Born in Siegen (in modern-day Germany) and raised in Antwerp, Rubens became one of the most successful and sought-after artists in 17th-century Europe. He was also a scholar, diplomat, and devout Catholic, which deeply influenced both the subjects and tone of his art.
Rubens is best known for large-scale altarpieces, mythological scenes, and historical paintings filled with movement, emotional intensity, and lush detail. His works often featured voluptuous figures and theatrical compositions—hallmarks of the Baroque style. Notable masterpieces include "The Descent from the Cross," "The Elevation of the Cross," and "The Judgment of Paris." He ran a large workshop in Antwerp, training many artists and producing an immense body of work. Rubens’ legacy is one of grandeur, vitality, and artistic brilliance.

Caravaggio
Caravaggio (1571–1610)
born Michelangelo Merisi, was a revolutionary Italian painter whose dramatic use of light and shadow—chiaroscuro and tenebrism—helped define the Baroque art movement. Unlike many of his contemporaries who idealized their subjects, Caravaggio portrayed religious and mythological figures with raw realism, often using ordinary people as models. His works are known for their emotional intensity, physical immediacy, and powerful contrasts between light and dark.
Some of his most famous paintings include "The Calling of Saint Matthew," "Judith Beheading Holofernes," and "The Supper at Emmaus." His controversial life—marked by brawls, arrests, and even a murder charge—mirrored the turbulent drama of his paintings. Despite dying young at age 38, Caravaggio profoundly influenced later Baroque artists like Rubens, Rembrandt, and Velázquez. Today, he is celebrated as a master who brought a new, visceral realism and emotional depth to European art.
